From September 24 to October 1, Waves to Home contributed to the international Stop All Genocides gathering in Italy, bringing the power of human stories to the center of global conversations on justice, memory, and human rights.
Representing Waves to Home, Shams facilitated a storytelling workshop inspired by the organization’s mission to preserve, honor, and amplify marginalized voices. The session explored the ethics of documenting human stories, how Palestinians preserve their history across generations, and the crucial role of storytelling in resisting the dehumanization of marginalized communities, particularly refugees.
Participants engaged in a series of reflective and interactive exercises that introduced them to the storytelling process and the dilemmas that come with ethical documentation. They learned how personal narratives can shed light on injustice, strengthen collective memory, and inspire action.
One of the most impactful moments of the workshop came when Baraa, a participant from Palestine, chose to share his personal experience. He presented a short video about his imprisonment and administrative detention by Israeli authorities, and later spoke in Arabic about his journey. Firas interpreted his words for the group.
The room was deeply moved. Many participants were brought to tears, witnessing firsthand the emotional weight and transformative power of authentic, lived stories. It became a powerful reminder of why storytelling remains essential in efforts to uphold human dignity and prevent all forms of mass violence.
Through this workshop, Waves to Home reaffirmed its commitment to creating safe, thoughtful spaces for individuals to share their truth—and to ensuring these stories continue to resonate far beyond the room.
Storytelling can change hearts. It can inspire action. It can preserve history. And in moments like this, it brings us closer to a world where every voice is valued.
